ESTABLISHED ROOFING CONTRACTORS
Yorkshire Roofing Specialists
Neal Roofing is a specialist roofing contractor based in York, North Yorkshire. Established in 1981 as Geoff Neal (Roofing) Limited, we undertake roofing work for homeowners, architects, building surveyors, commercial clients, churches, estates and custodians of historic buildings.
Our work ranges from targeted roof repairs and contractor inspections through to complete re-roofing, heritage restoration, specialist leadwork, zinc and hard-metal roofing, natural slate roofing, flat-roof replacement and technically demanding roof-envelope projects.
Each quotation is prepared around the actual requirements of the building. We consider the roof covering, substrates, insulation, ventilation, interfaces, access and drainage so that the proposed work reflects the complete roofing system rather than simply the visible covering.
Our objective is to provide a properly scoped roofing solution using appropriate materials, skilled operatives and detailing suited to the building, exposure and expected service life.
Where an independent assessment of roof condition, defect diagnosis, professional report or specification is required before roofing works are commissioned, clients may instead appoint an independent building surveyor.

Do You Need Roofing Work — or an Independent Roof Survey?
Not every roofing problem should begin with a contractor quotation.
If you already know that roofing work is required, Neal Roofing can inspect the building for the purpose of establishing access, scope, materials and a contractor quotation.
Where you instead require an independent assessment of condition, diagnosis of an unexplained defect, a professional report, acquisition advice or a specification before deciding what work should be undertaken, a separate building surveying instruction may be more appropriate.
Strut Building Surveyors provides independent roof surveys, building pathology investigations, defect reports and roofing specifications for residential, commercial and specialist properties.

Roofing Work Informed by Standards
Long-term roof performance depends on appropriate design, compatible materials and competent installation. Our roofing work is undertaken with regard to the British Standards, manufacturer requirements and recognised industry guidance applicable to the proposed construction.
The requirements vary depending on the building, roof covering, pitch, location, exposure and scope, but may include:
- BS 5534 for slating, tiling and pitched-roof fixing
- BS 6915 for fully supported lead and hard-metal roofing
- BS 6229 for flat roofs and continuously supported coverings
- BS 5250 for moisture management and condensation control
- BS EN 12588 for rolled lead sheet
- Manufacturer guidance for zinc, membranes, insulation and proprietary roof systems
The relevant standards form part of the wider project assessment. They do not replace practical judgement, examination of the existing building or consideration of how individual materials and junctions will perform together.

Neal Roofing is a member of the National Federation of Roofing Contractors.
Geoff Neal (Roofing) Limited is also included on the NFRC Heritage Register, supporting our capability on listed buildings, churches, period properties and conservation-sensitive roofing projects.
Roofing is our core discipline. Our work is delivered through operatives and teams experienced in the materials and systems relevant to each project, rather than treating every roof as a generic construction exercise.
Clients and Buildings We Work With
- Homeowners and private clients
- Architects and building surveyors
- Commercial clients and landlords
- Estate and property managers
- Churches and ecclesiastical bodies
- Schools and institutional buildings
- Custodians of listed and historic properties
Specialist Materials and Roofing Disciplines
Slate, tile, lead, zinc, flat-roof membranes, insulation, timber and rainwater goods each have different installation requirements. We allocate the appropriate skills and experience to the work being undertaken.
Material-Led Roofing Expertise
Many roofing failures arise because the material, substrate or interface has been misunderstood. Our project planning considers both the individual roofing discipline and how it connects with the remainder of the building.
- Leadwork and hard metals: gutters, valleys, flashings, bays, dormers, abutments, parapets and architectural interfaces
- Natural slate roofing: Welsh, Westmorland, Burlington, reclaimed and selected imported slates
- Clay and concrete tiling: plain tiles, pantiles, interlocking systems, repairs and full renewal
- Zinc roofing: standing-seam roofs, cladding, dormers, canopies, gutters and bespoke detailing
- Flat roofing: warm-roof construction, single-ply, liquid systems, built-up felt and insulation
- Roof joinery and substrates: timber repairs, boarding, decking, fascias, soffits and supporting construction
- Rainwater management: cast iron, aluminium, steel, zinc, timber and bespoke gutter systems
A Roof Must Perform as a Complete System
A slate roof requires different skills and detailing from a lead bay. Zinc roofing requires careful consideration of substrates and moisture. Heritage buildings require judgement about existing construction, historic fabric and compatible materials.
Before work begins, we consider:
- The suitability of the proposed material
- The existing roof structure and substrates
- The pitch, exposure and weathering details
- Ventilation, insulation and moisture risks
- Drainage and rainwater capacity
- Chimneys, abutments, penetrations and interfaces
- Historic and architectural sensitivity
- Access, sequencing and practical delivery
- Future maintenance requirements
This enables us to prepare a scope that reflects the actual building and allocate the correct operatives, materials and resources.
