The Property

The project was undertaken on a range of buildings attached to Sutton Park.

Sutton Park is a renowned 18th Century Georgian Country House.

Nestled in the picturesque North Yorkshire Village of Sutton-on-the-Forest the property lies circa 10 miles North of York.

The House is Grade I listed so any work undertaken needs to be done with the utmost sensitivity.

Built in 1730 the property was purchased by the current occupants, The Sheffield Family in 1963 when they relocated from Normanby Hall in North Lincolnshire.

The house and gardens are truly magnificent and the property is open to the public for part of the year.

Further, within the grounds there is a Clamping facility and cafe which is open from May to the end of September.

Specification of work

The project presented a few unique challenges.

As a result of the listed status, it was imperative that we recreated the aesthetic of the roof areas that were removed.

A careful selection of materials from appropriate suppliers of salvage was critical.

Moreover, as access scaffolding was erected, more work was identified and a careful balance of cost versus benefit was employed.

Further, the repairs to the windows escalated and more items were identified as we took apart the sash units.

Owing to our management team and facilities for presenting costs in progress to our clients, we were able to effectively oversee any amendments to the original specification and manage costs at each stage.

The Project

The work to replace the roof coverings to this range of buildings also encompassed some further repairs to the main house.

The roof areas were a mixture of stone and Westmorland slates and it was crucial that as much of the existing fabric was re used as part of the project.

Moreover, a number of chimneys were repaired using lime mortar and traditional methods as part of the overall scheme.

Additionally, as part of the project, all of the leadwork to the gutter linings between elevations and appropriate lead flashings were replaced in accordance with LSTA guidelines.

Furthermore, as works progressed, the levels of Insulation, so far as practicable, were improved to all areas of roof that were completely stripped.

Repairs to the timber sash windows and external decoration of the same also formed part of our contract. This work was executed using specialist sub contractors used to undertaking sympathetic timber restoration and decoration on such properties.
